There’s no doubt that this year has come with many challenges. With challenge comes perseverance, and that is what the DEKORA team has displayed this year. Reflecting on 2020 brings many emotions to the surface. One of those emotions is gratitude. The DEKORA team is so grateful to have been able to work on so many amazing projects this year. This has been the year for many unique trends in the design industry. It’s hard to choose favourites when it comes to picking our top projects of the year, that’s why we’ve rounded up a few of the projects that encompass some of our most-loved 2020 style trends.
Heritage on West 16th Avenue – Vancouver
Heritage on West 16th by Formwerks Boutique Properties was one of the unique Vancouver projects that we were lucky to work on this year. Three West 16th heritage homes were transformed into 12 new townhomes and infill coach house units. The townhomes retained their beautiful historic architecture while addressing the multi-family housing needed in the city of Vancouver.
This project allowed us to combine both new and old, something we don’t often get to do. The design vision for this project was a reimagining of heritage in the context of modern needs and tastes.
Keeping the heritage feel and enhancing the character of each townhome was the goal when staging the two display units. We chose a style that was fresh and luxurious with a modern twist, with an emphasis on high-quality materials and finishings.
When walking into these townhomes you’re automatically drawn to the beautiful warmth of wood floors combined with bright natural light. The mixture of lightly textured furnishings and dark wood accents was utilized to compliment the home's character, and neutral furnishings is a nod to a more modern home, and allows the historic architecture to take centre stage. These townhomes were sold inclusive of DEKORA’s furnishing package.
Watermark Show Home – Calgary
When thinking about all of the fabulous showhome projects that came our way this year, Watermark at Bearspaw in Calgary is a stand out. This Watermark home was the first project we did with New West Luxury Homes, and was a fully custom-designed showhome geared for large family living. This was a very exciting project for us to work on because of the luxurious vision and generous space for us to work with, 4123 square feet to be exact. Designed for maximum livability for family gatherings and entertainment, you are welcomed in with a visually stunning main living area and 130” LED TV. This sets the tone immediately for the scale of this unique project. The design style for this home was a modern interpretation of arts and crafts style with a 21st-century family spin. It was so fun to style this home with a family in mind, allowing us to focus on maximum comfort and usage of space.
West Hillhurst by Homes By Sorensen was a newly built side-by-side duplex spec home located in a family neighbourhood in Calgary. We were obsessed with the coziness of these units the home and theattention to detail in every aspect of the construction. No wonder this duplex sold in under 24 hours!
When staging this home we prioritized the needs of young children, keeping the furnishings very simple yet complimentary to the vintage brick accents and flooring. We were inspired by the rustic aspects of this home and wanted to ensure that the staging gave a glimpse into what life could look like in this family forward space.
While we are all very happy to say goodbye to the year that was 2020, we look forward with to a positive start to 2021. As much as the past year brought challenge and hardship to so many, it has made us more grateful for what we value and hold dear—our people and cherished connections, health and resilience, and humanity's ability to adapt and grow.
We want to express our gratitude to all of you—our customers and community—for the support you have shown over the past year, by giving back in some small way. This year Dekora has made donations to both the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and the Calgary Food Bank.
