As we transition into the new year, still focussed on feeling warm and cozy against the winter chill, it’s a good time to consider what’s underfoot. Floor coverings in every form are a key element of our living spaces and are as old as human civilization – literally since we lived in caves! With such history to draw from, the options are practically endless.
The right area rug can define a room, anchor furniture groupings and become the basis of colour and texture choices. And there are a lot of options to choose from! Reflecting back to October’s High Point Market, one of the key things we noticed there was the amazing diversity of rugs and other floor coverings. Area rugs from traditional patterns to modern geometric styles remain a standard, but flat-weave rugs are now everywhere, even in very high-end settings, along with a renewed popularity for natural fibres such as jute, seagrass and sisal. These more casual treatments can work beautifully in a wide range of environments from casual to formal.
Strong colour and texture is a big part of the story too, with bold patterns and varied materials. Tribal rugs are a great example of this and can be a powerful statement as individually hand-crafted and beautiful pieces. Cowhides are another variation of floor treatments that can create big impact, whether natural or dyed, and they’re becoming more and more popular.
Finally, consider layering different rugs for an eclectic, relaxed and unstructured feel. The visual impact of mixed patterns and textures can set the tone for a true bohemian-chic look!
